About Lucknow
Lucknow wears its history lightly and politely — this is the city of 'pehle aap', where even the traffic seems to have manners after a plate of galouti kebabs. The Nawabs of Awadh made it a capital of poetry, music and architecture in the 18th and 19th centuries, and their monuments still dominate the old city around Husainabad.
Just 90-odd kilometres up the road, it's the natural first hop from Kanpur: start at the Bara Imambara's beamless hall, lose yourself in the Bhool Bhulaiya, stand beneath the Rumi Darwaza at sunset, then go 'ganjing' along Hazratganj. Save room — Lucknow's kitchens are why most people come back.
